THE CHALLENGE

In 2018, we took on a long-term technical translation project for a North American rail giant, who’s been our client since we opened for business. The company had to take the vast body of literature produced by its Mechanical department—including case studies, training materials, and assembly and repair instructions—and have it all translated into French to comply with the Quebec Charter of the French Language (Bill 101).

As some of the documents dated back to 1990, we faced the extra challenge of dealing with obsolete terminology and not being able to reach the authors to get our questions answered.

THE SOLUTION

We began by actively looking for professional technical translators and determining the right workflow for the Herculean task at hand. As the project moved forward, we had to rethink and simplify our processes more than once to improve efficiency and meet our client’s constantly changing needs.

The 3.3-million-word project took three years to complete and kept quite a few of us busy. In all, we had more than three project managers, eight seasoned translators, a team of DTP specialists and at least four proofreaders working on it.

Our client is very happy with our service and, even though the initial project is finished, our work continues. The company now has a database to hold all of its future Mechanical documentation, and our job is to translate the documents in the client’s system as they are added.
